Why are you running for East Lansing City Council?

Fourteen months ago, I was appointed to East Lansing City Council. My term ends Nov. 2. I’d like to be elected and serve for four years. I want to diversify the council. Studies show that diversity of teams improves the quality of decisions.

What are your main policy goals if elected to East Lansing City Council?

My policy goals are directed toward environmental practices, equitable practices, policing practices that keep the community safe and press for accountability, and affordable housing.

What makes you stand out from the other candidates running?

I work in public health, so I’ve learned from that perspective why and where the health of a community comes from. I have been trained to further racial justice work and be a champion for inclusivity. I utilize my understanding of government as a council member, from former commissions, as well as, my community experience as a Black mother. I am the only female running candidate. Sexism and racism affect my perspective and personalizes my drive for an anti-racist, diverse and inclusive community.

How would you improve the city’s relationship with Michigan State University?

We have a University Commission that stopped during the epidemic. I would support getting the commission going again. Ongoing meetings with ASMSU because they have a good gauge and representation of student issues/perspectives. There are meetings with MSU heads, I have been involved in the meetings, so I support these continuing. I like invitations and learning more about MSU student groups and reaching out to them too.

How do you plan on involving residents in East Lansing to build a better community?

I am a homeowner and I live amongst renters, mostly students. I will continue to encourage working together because we all live here. It doesn’t have to be residents vs. students. Finding commonalities will help with building a better community. Respecting one another’s values and needs collectively will help. I support surveys, townhalls and opening up ways to communicate your thoughts.
